Product and Food Photography

A few product / food portfolio shots from a couple years back, newly re-photoshopped for this blog. Not doing much of this sort of work anymore, much more high-volume low-quality!
(1) A bottle of U’Luvka Vodka, (2) some sort of cream liqueur called Meaghers, (3) some orange juice with oranges, and (4) some edamame soybeans. Thank goodness for liquor store return policies!
Focal Point HDR Class – Second Group

I’ve begun the second run of my HDR course at Focal Point — extremely small group this time, only three students! Nice for me and nice for them, not entirely preferable for Focal Point, one would imagine. These are some of my example shots from our first outing, a walk around Granville Island from 6-9pm. I should think of somewhere more interesting to take us next time, somewhere between the life-threatening hazards of that old factory and the dull familiarity of Gastown.
BC Premiere Gordon Campbell

The Kitsilano Chamber of Commerce recently hosted BC Liberal Premiere Gordon Campbell at its “Dialogue with the Premier” event at the UBC University Golf Club.
2010 Vancouver Olympics – Bell Blue Lounge
I spent most of February working with the illustrious and powerful Robin O’Neill for Bell Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics. In making the most of their investment as the exclusive telecommunications partner, Bell had rented the entirety of the Westin Grand hotel to entertain their guests and investors with event tickets and various goings-on at the Bell Blue Lounge (the once and future Players Chophouse). I left my desk to do some second shooting at the Blue Lounge as the friends of Bell were treated to a little face-time with our newest and favourite gold medalists, Alexandre Bilodeau, Maelle Ricker, and Ashleigh McIvor. Also present were VANOC head honcho John Furlong, great Canadian man in motion Rick Hanson, amazing expert trumpeter and orchestral lead for the opening ceremonies whose name I wish I could remember, and later in the evening, Sarah McLachlan.
Enrique

A small side job during my Olympic work with Bell. This is a quick portrait of Enrique Waizel, system architect for Bell Canada here in Vancouver, shot for Expansion Magazine of Mexico.
Capilano River Cart

Another oldie reprocessed anew. Where the Capilano River meets the ocean, the locals prefer to transport their canned beer and fishing poles to and fro using these traditional conveyances.
Skytrain

The Vancouver skytrain, sometime last year. I’ll be running my HDR course at Focal Point again this spring. What was I thinking doing it in the winter? Anyway, maybe this time there will be some daylight.
Ryan

Very quick headshot / website image session with Ryan of P.R. Associates in downtown Vancouver. Shot at f/1.4 with rapidly fading window light.
AME Roundup Convention I
Spent most of this week covering the Association for Mineral Exploration convention taking place at the Westin Bayshore, for PR Associates. Here are some of the shots from the last few days.
I tend to avoid any unnecessary flashing, so it’s mainly high ISO work.. Canon 5d Mk II with 70-200mm 2.8 on one shoulder, Canon 5D Mk I with either 50mm f/1.4 or 15mm on the other shoulder plus tungsten gelled flash. Very sore neck now.
Please take note of the shot with the apples, I think it’s fantastic.
H.R. MacMillan Space Centre
Another Kitsilano Chamber of Commerce event, this one taking place at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre.. Really maxing out the low light capabilities of the Canon 5D Mark I.
Cambie General Store

Kind of a quick job…could be better, but you can’t tell that because it’s just a little web jpg.
Kitsilano Chamber of Commerce at Figmint
Here’s the most recent event of the Kitsilano Chamber of Commerce, held at Figmint on 12th and Cambie. Holiday-esque dinner and fundraiser! Fun was had. Funds were raised. Some sort of wrapped-gift-lottery occurred, which involved either taking a new gift or stealing somebody else’s. One was a large basket of exciting assorted things. *ding!* One was an “easy button.” *wonk wonk wonk*
Presents.
Innovative, cutting-edge, exciting work continues to happen down at the cracker factory. Signage pictures of presents to advertise some holiday thing or another. Why isn’t it 255 white? I didn’t feel like it, that’s why.
More Granville Island
Going to try to get back to doing regular updates of current and semi-recent stuff, whether or not I think it’s all that interesting.
Focal Point HDR Class IX: SFU

Well here’s my demo shot from the final shooting day of my 10-cass HDR course at Focal Point, up at SFU. Here we incorporate people into our shots, probably the toughest thing to do well. Thanks again to Mary for helping out with being the “people” I said we would be shooting..
Abandoned Factory Fun
Homeless man #1: “You went WHERE?!”
Yes, an unaffiliated and completely voluntary trip into an abandoned factory. We take a closer look at incorporating people into our HDR shots with a couple freezing rained-upon models. My one and only demo shot, plus a few more from previous visits.
I took a dirty rusty nail through the shoe in this place earlier in the week and got a tetanus shot…Same week as the swine & seasonal flu vaccines. Now resembling the Bonnie & Clyde car.
Focal Point HDR Class VI
I took my HDR class out to the Gastown area on Thursday night to work in the dark, with freezing wind and rain! Ideal conditions to avoid taking the exact same picture of the steam clock that every other tourist takes. Here are a few of my own from the night. It was a grande olde time, and we afterwards supped upon delicate madeleine tea cakes, with much throat-clearing and polishing of monocles all round from the gentlemen. Croquet in the morning, fellows, pip pip!
Kitsilano Chamber of Commerce Westside Business Awards of Achievement 2009
Yes and I even will do events — it’s the Kitsilano Chamber of Commerce Westside Business Awards of Achievement 2009! Dinner and silent auction at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club.
Johnny Stork in a Smart Car

I’ve been running an HDR class over at Focal Point every Thursday evening. Here’s two versions of an example shot we took tonight of Johnny Stork in a Smart Car.. I’ve never seen anyone sit so still…not a pixel out of place despite several minutes ticking by. Hope he doesn’t mind being on my blog. Processed them pretty quick, but there ya go.
Fall in Gastown
Did this quick fall lineup shoot on Friday in one of those little Gastown alleys. You’d think meeting at 3:00pm would give plenty of daylight for several hours of shooting and a few locations, but nope, clothes need to be steamed, looks need to be assembled, hair and makeup needs to be done, equipment needs checking and setting up, and we all need to pile into a van and find the first of the locations that I scouted ahead of time. When it was all ready to go, it was quickly getting dark, and only time enough for an hour or so of shooting.. Shot these in failing light at f/1.4 at 2000 ISO on the Mk II, with an orange gelled flash and silver/gold reflector. So much for the bright and natural sunlit hair envisioned by our creative director, maybe next time. Thanks to Issha for helping out, who had to fly to Toronto the next day, and thanks to me who had to go play a show at the Railway the same night. Busy busy..
Main & Hastings

I haven’t been updating regularly for the past week or so as I’ve been preoccupied with moving across town from one dwelling to another. Things seem to be back on track now anyway. To celebrate my return, here is a picture of Main & Hastings. Just your regular snapshot, nothing peculiar going on here…
